The Garden in the Machine

The project aims to merge “garden” and “machine”
concepts at Place Bell in Ottawa. It involves
replacing a 10-storey parking structure with a
modern automated facility, partly funded by parking
revenue for Operation Come Home (OCH). Design
challenges include balancing corporate needs, solar
shading, and creating additional public green spaces

Design Strategy
Our aim was to establish a secure and cozy
environment for the children accommodated here.
Each bedroom ensures complete privacy with its
own entrance. The circulation ramp not only fosters
interaction and physical activity indoors but also
caters to the safety of children reluctant to venture
outside. A public garden nestled between the OCH
building and parking structure encourages residents
to engage with the community. Positioned at the
intersection’s corner, the entrance provides a clear
path into the building, facilitating navigation for
visitors.
