Wisteria Gardens

The project involves designing an Urban Forestry
Knowledge Center, emphasizing urban reforestation
and public education. It aims to showcase forestry
research, expand Ottawa’s Experimental Farm, and
combat climate change effects by germinating hardy
tree species in a greenhouse for citywide relocation.
The design must integrate with the urban context
and facilitate pedestrian access.
The site study revealed predominant North-West
winds shifting seasonally, strongest from the North
in winter and from the West in summer. The site
design aims for users to experience varying wind
and solar energies along a linear path. Three types
of trees, one suited to sun and wind, another not,
grow naturally around these paths. Users are likened
to leaves, experiencing how these trees thrive in
diverse environments across seasons.

Design Strategy
Site A features a centralized layout with distinct
program areas, anchored by the main building
known as the Anchor. The engineering testing
woodshop boasts high ceilings and direct access
to the loading dock, while the workshop and lab
pods prioritize privacy for scientists. Each pod
includes a mini greenhouse and connects to the
main greenhouse. The main building includes a
welcoming greenhouse serving as a gathering
space, along with an auditorium that can
transform for larger events. Ample glazing and
high roofs optimize natural light throughout the
site, while wisteria enhances the user experience
and guides them through the space.
