Safe Haven
The purpose of this project was to design a Long-Term Care Facility located in Ottawa’s Urban Core, on 413 Bank Street. Safe Haven is designed as a long term care facility that provides a place of refuge and security for its residents and its visitors.
Design Strategy
The combination of public and private spaces allow for a variety of programs that view into the open atrium space, providing maximum sunlight into all the spaces. Elevated walkways on each level link significant programs to each other, as well as allow the interactions between the users of the building. The facade consists of maximized glazing for maximized sunlight to enter the building, and the trees growing from the basement allow for a natural element for users to feel at ease, while simultaneously bringing the outside into the building. The different aspects of the building offer its users multiple means of interaction to limit the loneliness that is usually experienced within these facilities. Opening the main floor for public use allows the residents to interact with beyond their neighours, creating a sense of community within the building.
